This RIBA award winning project encapsulates a low-carbon, energy-efficient and adaptable approach to family living in a rural context. The clients wanted a building that connected with the beautiful rural landscape and reflected their love of Japanese art and culture; particularly the Wabi Sabi philosophy, which celebrates the beauty of imperfections in the natural world and in the patina of a materials use. Located in a conservation area. The Old Coach House dated from the 1860’s and was in need of care and attention. The project consisted of a careful remodeling of internal spaces, a 50m2 extension making kitchen/dining and ground floor bedroom and a retrofit which saw the windows upgraded and a lime insulating plaster added internally.

Located in Longtown, Herefordshire, we transformed the dated farmhouse into a sustainable, contemporary rural home. Adopting a ‘fabric-first’ approach, we boosted energy efficiency using recycled cellulose insulation and high-performance windows. The exterior features striking black-stained timber cladding and Corten steel, creating a modern agricultural aesthetic. Inside, open-plan spaces now seamlessly connect to the garden, framing spectacular views of the Welsh mountains

Located in Newton St Margarets, Herefordshire, the Mulberry House project focuses on the sensitive extension and remodelling of a traditional stone cottage. Our design prioritises sustainability through a fabric-first approach, enhancing energy efficiency with superior insulation. By using locally-sourced materials and a thoughtful layout, we’ve created a modern, resilient home that respects the Golden Valley’s landscape while delivering a seamless connection between contemporary living and its rural heritage.
